SIBO Diet & Nutritional Strategies
Manage bacterial fermentation, control gastrointestinal symptoms, and protect the mucosal barrier through evidence-based dietary interventions.
Fermentation Control
The low-FODMAP diet limits rapidly fermented short-chain carbohydrates. It eases gas and bloating for many people but does not clear SIBO, and is meant to be temporary.
Low-Carb & Keto
Cutting carbohydrates reduces gas, and a low-carb diet did about as well as low-FODMAP in an IBS trial. Very high fat intake and low fiber can backfire with SIBO.
Fermented Foods & Histamine
Kefir and sauerkraut have not been studied in SIBO. Lactose, fermentable fibers and histamine can worsen symptoms, so a slow reintroduction after treatment is the cautious approach.
